Sad [:(]Going back to work - when is the right time?
Reply Quote

I am a single mum with a 16 week old daughter - I went back to work last week for a lot of reasons - I wasn't in the country for a while so didn't get any maternity pay, I am living at home with my parents until I can afford to move out, I am also going through post natal depression, so thought going back to work would be good for me both mentally and socially.  I want to do the best for my daughter and give her the things she needs (I am not a material person however) and I dont want to be a benefits mum, and I also want to live away from my home, so couldnt see any way around this.

Since coming back I have had a lot of questions as to why I have come back full time and basically I feel thoroughly guilty - I have had this baby under very difficult circumstances but find this hard to keep re-explaining to people - is there anyone else out there like me?

I went back to work when my son was only 3 months old. I didn't jump straight in at the deep end though. I eased myself in by working half days for the first month and building up to full days the second month.

The question why did you come back so quickly, no need for big explanations, the answer is I can't afford not to.

As you have gone back to work full-time, you are entitled to child tax credits and working tax credits, if you don't use your parents as child care. I know this may seem strange but my advise is not to use your parents but get yourself a registered childminder (the tax credits will cover the costs), not only will it give your parents a break but you will have a qualified person, who will be able to advise you on your baby (whats normal with teething best ways to help etc), who actually knows your child. They will also expose your child to other children, which I found encouraged my son do try to do things for himself. It was a really positive thing for me, as the childminder gave me help and advise, that as a first time mum you don't know and as much as your mum will help, its probably been a few decades since she went through bringing up a kid.

As for the questions they will die down in a few weeks and actually being around adults and being more than just mum is so important. You are a person too and this is your place to be you on a regular basis. i did find I had to point out to people when I first went back to work that I did want to be busy, so I had less time to miss my son.

Big hug.

Thank you Jay, I appreciate you replying so quickly.  I am bowled over at how strong my emotions are at the moment, sometimes really happy and on the other hand, absolutely terrified
