Help...what will i be entitled to?
Reply Quote

Hi,

Ive found out im pregnant -10-11wks so still early days.Had to have a scan as my periods were all over the place-but when i saw the image, i knew i couldnt abort it. The father said he'l be there for the baby, which is nice, however we're not in a stable relationship and dont live together.

Im 24 and still live at home (which isnt big enough for a baby as well)-and whilst my mums been great (as it was a shock to us all-i fell on the mini pill) my dad has flipped and isnt happy.

Can someone advice me as to the benefits il be entitled to? support networks? housing?-council or private? i also work full time so will have to return to work-but im on a low income-below £12k...so things like my car will have to go for a cheaper, more practical one...

Any thoughts, advice grately recieved....im a mess at the mo, and dont know what to do.

thanks, my heads spinning

beanie x

Hello Beanie,

Okay if your in fulltime employment when you got pregnant you will be entitled to maternity pay. When you go back to work you will get child/working tax credits, which as your on a low wage and I'm assuming doing more than 30 hours will pay for childcare (so your mum doesn't have to do it), that and I will have to say I took the childminder route and they are so helpful, you just have to make sure you get a good one.

have a look at this
http://www.entitledto.co.uk/
it says it can help you work out what you'd get.

I'm trying to remember where I got all my financial advice when I was pregnant as I did it all on my own from day one too, I think I had a great little book on pregnancy that was based around a career girl, but I can't remember the title but it gave you all you UK rights and your empolyers obligations, I also thing that Pregnancy and Baby does a few useful articles on this.

You will also get child benifit, which off the top of my head is about £17 a week

Another thing to do is to sign up to all the sainsburys, tesco, huggies, pampers baby sites, they all normally give you freebies when the little one arrives.

Another piece of a advise is people will offer to help and give you things to help, don't be too proud to say "yes please", every little thing helps

As for your car think relible and economic, if you can afford it a 5 door it would help (I had a 3 door when i first had my son and get the car seats in and out was a real pain).

You will be surprised if you plan ahead like this and get your head in gear, it wont actually be that bad.

Another website that may help is http://www.moneysavingexpert.com
Its got a section of free stuff, which is also good, the family and health section may also help to answer some of your benifit questions, I've been a little fuzzy on.

I hope some of this helps.
