Hi All

I'm working on a piece for Sunday Magazine (News of the World's supplement) headline, 'single mums are heroes'. Here are some examples of inspiring and saddening stories I've heard about single mums:

a) Mum A has two children under five. Her husband decided when he hit 40, that he wasn't sure he was ready to commit to a family... Mum A is left to deal with the children and explain as best as she can why Daddy doesn't live with them any more.

b) Mum B has a child age six. She left her daughter's father when child B was three months old. Although both parents are from respectable working/middle class families, husband B was prone to violent rages. Mum B left after an incident where he kicked her in the head while she was ***-feeding. He'd also taken all the baby's clothes and bottles and thrown them in a nearby stream.

c) Mum C has two children under eight. Her husband walked out when the youngest was 18-months-old. He left because he complained he didn't get enough sex. Admittedly, sex was non-existant, but the youngest child was a bad sleeper, waking up to 10 times a night. Mum C was simply exhausted. Husband C was doing shift work and would expect Mum C to be available for sex when he arrived home at midnight - (she'd usually just got the baby to sleep after two hours of crying) or he'd wake her up at 6am to have sex before he went out to his morning shift. Often, she'd only had two hours sleep. He once pulled her out of bed at 4am to have sex. She was pregnant with their second child at the time.

People don't realise how hard it can be for single mums and there is a perception that they're a lazy lot blagging off the state. As you know, that is so untrue.

I'd like to interview mums with strong stories like these, about how you became a single mum. Please contact me in confidence (and no obligation) @ sallymj.beck@virgin.net or call Sally on 020 7737 7754. Sunday magazine will pay £500 for genuine stories.
