Ok, are they any teachers out there, preferably one that have retrained after having there little one. I want a realist idea of how hard it is to do when your a single mum.

Am a teacher (secondary) due to have baby in Feb - did my PGCE at age 30 - it really depends on a) how young yr children are and b) the sort of teaching (age range - primary/secondary) you want to do .  On the plus side you can get help with childcare etc if you train for a shortage subject.

Thanks Karen,

I'm looking at secondary science and if i start this year my little one would just turned two. I'm having to look at on the job training as the figures just don't add up to be a full time student with a mortagage, it will be tight enough doing it on the job but I think I can put aside enough to make it do able.

asked around at my school (we are a training school for surrey) and apparently you would be entitled to max benefits as a science teacher regardless of the route you choose to take.  What is worth looking at is for schools in yr area which have nursery/creche facilities attached.  I know several of the larger secondary schools in my neck of the woods have these facilities - and as there are 10 of us pregnant at my school at the moment we are trying to get something going here.  Also many LEAs do vouchers/reductions for childcare if they dont actually provide it.

Hi

I started my PGCE when my daughter was 14 months old. At that point I was still with her dad, but that made little difference as I did most of the childcare myself.

I did find the PGCE tough, but mainly because my placements were quite tough and I did not really realise how all-consuming teaching can be. Most people on the course spent their weekends working and that was not an option for me, so I had to work late into the evenings to get it all done.

I am now in my third year teaching and have been a single mum since last May.

Being a single mum and teaching has its advantages and disadvantages. On the plus side, you get to share holidays with your children and can occasionally pick them up from school and you will be able to relate to your students more effectively as a mother with lots of life experience. On the minus side, you will find that you need to work most evenings during term time and you will have to arrange cover work if you are forced to be off work, because your child is sick.

It's not been easy, but I have no regrets about moving from a successful management career into teaching.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

Madi

p.s Sorry, just started a new post by accident. I'm new here!

Thanks that helps.

I've been offered a place in a school to train but I'm waiting to hear from the college that will do the training. I'm not afraid of hard work infact, I miss not having a mental challenge everyday I used to get.

Fingers crossed, I so want to start this September. it really feels the right thing for me.
